Many trainers and or veterinarians do not recommend group classes as an effective solution for training. Why is that? Well, it’s most likely because it’s hard to find good group classes and it’s hard to teach good group classes!

Effective dog obedience classes are a wonderful, affordable way to train your dog. Group classes range from 4-6 weeks long and are designed to teach you how to train your dog. Unleashed offers beginning, intermediate and advanced classes. If done well, group classes provide a positive, well-managed environment for your family and your dog. If done poorly, group classes can be over-crowded and can contribute to anxiety and over-arousal in dogs. Unleashed Dog Training & Behavior Center creates a positive learning environment that focuses on a small, well-managed group of dogs and owners. Dogs and owners feel safe and comfortable throughout the class.

The cost of group dog training classes can range from $100-175 for the whole session. This cost is in great contrast to private lessons which can range anywhere from $150-$300 per hour. In addition to being more affordable, group classes can provide an opportunity for much needed socialization and a “support group” for owners with new dogs. You can order a tie down right on the Unleashed website for $10. Unleashed is located in El Dorado Hills and will ship tie downs anywhere in the country. Don't go on a wild goose chase looking for one, almost all pet stores sell "tie outs," but not tie downs. They are a completely different tool used for different things.

Proper management is one of the key components contributing to a well-mannered dog. Good management essentially entails understanding what are realistic expectations for your dog and how to set your dog up for success. For example, many young dogs aren’t capable of being left alone in the house all day without showing some signs of stress or boredom. Stress and boredom can often lead to destructive behavior. Therefore, many dogs are destructive in the house as a result of poor management. If your dog is alone in the house all day and chews up the couch, what is he learning when you come home and punish him? He will decide that chewing on the couch is fun and you coming home is bad! When you cannot supervise your dog, confine him to a crate or dog-proof area to prevent bad habits from developing. When you are home, supervise your dog so that you can stop misbehavior and redirect him into an appropriate activity.

New Summer Schedule--Check it out!!

Unleashed is gearing up for your busy summer schedules. We know that summertime is chalk full of kids activities, camps and vacations. You know how important obedience training is, but this time of year, it’s hard to commit to a full 6-week training program for your dog. Let us help you by offering a special Summer Schedule.

It’s our same great quality and same small class size, but we’ve broken down our curriculum into easy-to-commit 3-week class sessions instead of the traditional 6-week sessions. Unfortunately, we usually get this comment after they’ve hired us to help them…”I wish someone told me this wasn’t a good idea!”

Getting littermates isn’t all-bad. The dogs are usually very nice dogs! And, you only need to go through the potty training and puppy-chewing phase once. Those are some pretty big pros.

The problem is that there are two of them! Many owners are under the false impression that two dogs are easier than one…”they have each other to play with.” The fact is that we never recommend that someone gets another dog unless they want another dog and have twice as much time to commit to another dog. Don’t get another dog to keep your first one company! The novelty can wear off quickly and then you have two dogs that are chewing things up in your yard or barking excessively.

The three biggest things to consider when you look at getting littermates is your relationship with your dog, training and socialization. Relationship is probably the most important part of having a well-behaved dog. Dogs are pack animals and need to feel part of a pack. Ideally you want your dog to be totally and completely bonded to you. With littermates, it’s much harder to achieve this relationship because they already have their pack, with their littermate. Littermates don’t “need or want” their owners company as much as each others’. To remedy this, make an effort to separate the puppies for a short time on a daily basis in order for them to learn how to be alone. This is an important life skill. It also gives you a chance to bond to the other puppy.

Training is tricky with littermates. Take it from us, training two dogs together can be almost impossible.
Effective obedience training requires consistent reward and impeccable timing. The ideal thing to do is to separate the dogs when they are learning new behaviors. Once the behaviors are solidified individually, then try to work with them together.

Many owners who have littermates don’t realize how important it is to socialize their dogs separately with other dogs and with people. During puppyhood, it’s extremely important to take your puppy safe places and expose them to the real world. Expose them to safe, older dogs, children, shopping carts, skateboards, etc. Let them see the world. This is much harder to do with two dogs than one.

What do we recommend? We always tell people to wait at least 6mos before adding another dog to your pack. That gives you time to bond to the first dog and get them off to a good start from a training standpoint. Then if you feel you are ready for the commitment of another dog, go for it!

<span style="font-size:20.0pt; Breed specific behavior can help us reach our training goals faster and understand our dog better.

"Why is our Labrador so mouthy?"

"Why is our Border Collie chasing cars?"

"Why is our German Shepherd so territorial?"

"Why won't our Beagle come?"

These are all breed specific behaviors that are "hard wired" in these breeds. Can you stop these behaviors? In some cases, yes, in other cases, you manage the behavior but can't extinguish it. We shouldn't choose a dog only because they are the right size, or they have short hair, etc. Many Terriers, for example, are small and have short hair, but they are tenacious, smart, high energy dogs bred with a "big dog attitude." Many owners get in over their head with a specific breed. A little research can go a long way...

For more info on breed specific behaviors, check out http://www.anticruelty.org/site/epage/74487_576.htm

Socialize your dog!

Take your dog along! This is a great time of year to bring your dog with you on outings. There are many health and behavior reasons to bring your dog with you when you are running around town.

Dogs need mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. Bringing your dog with you on a quick trip to the cleaners or to the grocery store allows you to fit some training into your day. Work on some car manners, practice a quick wait command as you load up your dog. Even if he doesn't get out of the car, it allows for a change of scenery and new smells. If you have a quick second, get him out of the car and practice some loose leash walking and maybe a sit stay while people walk by. These short, distracting training opportunities are priceless for achieving appropriate manners in public.

My favorite places to train are Starbucks (because its a regular stop for me) and Safeway in El Dorado Hills because I love all the traffic and the shopping cart noises.

Where do you bring your dog?

How Much Training Should I do Each Day With My Dog??

This is one of the first questions we get when owners embark on a new training program, whether it be a group class or private lessons. The answer is simple...do as many short (3-5minutes) training sessions as you can. But, the most important thing to remember is to incorporate your training into your every day activities. For example, practice your wait command as you head out the door for your walk on the El Dorado Hills trails. Or, practice a quick down stay while you make a sandwich or are getting some dishes done.

If you set up one big "training session" per day, your dog will do great during that "training time" and then it all goes out the window when you need it in real life situations...

Remember, every time you interact with your dog, your dog is learning something!!! Make it count!

Congratulations on your new puppy!! Stay, or don’t move from the position I put you in, can be an incredibly convenient command for owners. How many of you can honestly say that your dog’s stay is solid? Will they sit and stay when you see a friend outside of Starbucks in El Dorado Hills? Will they lay down and stay when you have guests over for dinner on these warm Sacramento evenings?

These are the kind of stays that we’re talking about. The key to a successful stay is practice. Generalize your stay command by practicing it in a number of different places. Don’t combine duration and distance when you are first starting out. Practice one at a time. Keep the exercises short and successful. Most owners push it too fast and set the dog up to fail by not reinforcing enough and setting unrealistic expectations. Practice with minimum distractions and gradually build, making sure to praise often. And finally, make sure you have a specific release word that your dog understands to mean he is done with whatever you’ve asked of him.

Obedience is fun for you and your dog. But, remember it can also be a huge help in achieving your long term lifestyle goals in dog ownership. Do yourself and your dog a favor by continuing to practice and build on the obedience you’ve already achieved.

Why Take Advanced Classes????

We all know that our dogs need some obedience training. Most people agree that a beginning level class that is well-managed and well-taught will benefit you and your dog. However, many owners have unrealistic expectations of a beginning level class. A beginning, or basic obedience class, teaches you how to communicate with your dog and teaches your dog how to learn. It does not teach your dog, or you, all the obedience you will need for the rest of your dogs life. Think of it this way, if you stop training after a basic obedience class, it’s like sending your child to Kindergarten-Third Grade and then saying, you’re all done with school. Obviously, kids, and dogs for that matter, need more school!!

Unleashed Advanced offers the next level in training. Advanced Classes focus on applying what you’ve learned in your basic class, but adding distractions and adding distance. The sit stay and down stay don’t do you any good if your dog won’t do it with distractions! The come command is essential, but will your dog listen and respond when he’s playing with another dog at Folsom Dog Park, or following a scent on the Serrano Trails in El Dorado Hills? These are the challenges we face as dog owners. However, in saying that, it’s important to understand that dogs need to be taught these behaviors with distance, duration and distractions in mind. Just because a dog knows sit in your living room, doesn’t mean he knows it at your child’s soccer game. Dogs need to generalize behaviors before they become reliable. That’s the cornerstone of “Unleashed Advanced.”

For more information about Unleashed Dog Training & Behavior Center located in El Dorado Hills, check out some more posted blogs or email unleashmk@comcast.net for specific questions.

Combine Training with Play

Owning and caring for a dog takes a lot of time and commitment. Plus, for dogs who need a lot of exercise, you not only have to find time to run the dogs but you need to find time to train the dog as well. Who has that kind of time??? Remember that combining training and play can save time and create a more solid understanding of commands for your dog. For instance, let’s say you have one of those ball-crazy, “I’ll do anything for the ball” dogs. Although taking her to the park and chucking the ball 50 times will do wonders for her behavior around the house because she’s just plain tired, why not incorporate some training into that ball chucking? Kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. Can she sit before you throw it? Can she lay down? If she knows these commands, then she can do them for the ball. She may not know she can at first because she doesn’t know how to think when the ball is present, but with patience and clarity on your part, she will learn how to think with the ball and she’ll even learn to think faster because the reward is not a pat or a treat, but it’s what she wants most at that moment...for you to pull your arm back and hurl that ball as far as possible. Another example is asking for a sit or a heel on the way into the dog park. It may take some repetitions but your dog will figure out that the reward does not come until the behavior you are asking for is accomplished. So, on those beautiful days in El Dorado Hills, take your dog to the park to the throw the ball or to the Folsom Dog Park and have her work for what they want most…entrance to the park!

New January Class Date

Group classes seem to be a little difficult to find in the El Dorado Hills/Folsom area. I find that many trainers do not recommend group classes as an effective solution for training. Why is that? Well, it’s most like because these trainers don’t offer group classes and/or have never taught group dog training classes. Effective dog obedience classes are a wonderful, affordable way to train your dog. Many group classes are 6-8 weeks long and are designed to teach you how to train your dog. Most group classes will cover basic obedience commands like sit, down, stay, loose leash walking, coming when called and not jumping up. If done well, group classes provide a positive, well managed environment for your family and your dog. The cost of group dog training classes can range from $90-$200 for the whole session. This cost is in great contrast to private lessons which can range anywhere from $100-$300 per hour session. In addition to being more affordable, group classes can provide an opportunity for much needed socialization and a “support group” for owners with new dogs. Mandy Kennedy, owner of Unleashed Dog Training, has taught successful group classes for 15 years and teaches now with 4Paws University (www.4pawsu.com) in Sacramento. Unleashed offers group classes in El Dorado Hills at Lakehills Church. We entitled the presentation, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Dog Parks." More recently, we have been asked to comment on our blog about Dog Park Etiquette. Here is a quick overview of what you can expect at Dog Parks. But, we at Unleashed, encourage you to visit “Fido’s Forum” on our website, www.unleashdogtraining.com and post your own Dog Park experiences.

The Dog Park can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Dog Parks are usually specially designed fenced in areas for dogs to run and play off leash. In theory, this is a great idea. Many dog owners are apprehensive to let their dogs off leash in an unfenced area because they are worried about them running away. Also, many dog owners understand the benefits of socialization and exercise; and it can be hard to achieve these with a busy schedule. For these reasons, A Dog Park can be a wonderful opportunity for you and your dog. For the purposes of this blog, we’ll use the Folsom Dog Park as an example.

What you can expect
All well-behaved spayed and neutered dogs are welcome.

There is a double gate for you and your dog to enter through. This ensures that dog’s don’t escape as you are coming in.

Take off your dog’s leash after you go through the first gate, but before you go through the second gate. This will enable your dog to have the most natural body language as they say hello to other dogs upon entry.

As you and your dog enter, walk right past the other dogs, as to avoid a stopped crowd at the gate.

For your first few visits, try to go at the “non-busy times.” These times are usually during regular working hours…after 5pm and on the weekends can be very crowded and a little overwhelming for you and your dog.

Check the regular hours. In the past, the Folsom Dog Park was closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays…not sure if this is still the case.

The Folsom Dog Park has two separate areas. One is for dogs 25lbs and under and the other is for larger dogs.

Watch your dog’s interaction carefully. If your dog seems afraid or overwhelmed, try to distract him/her with a toy or start walking and encourage your dog to come with you.

If there is another dog there that appears to be “bullying” your dog or if your dog is bullying other dogs, try to interrupt the behavior. Be prepared to leave if the situation doesn’t improve.

Remember that not all dogs want and need the socialization that a dog park may provide. If your dog doesn’t appear happy, be prepared to leave.

In conclusion, Dog Parks are not monitored and some owners bring inappropriate dogs. It is your job to keep your dog’s interactions positive and safe.

Unleashed Dog Training & Behavior Center of El Dorado Hills provides evaluations and private lessons in home, or at a dog park, to help owners determine whether it’s a safe and productive environment for your dog. Unleashed also conducts Positive Reinforcement Group Training Classes to build your dog’s obedience base and improve on your relationship with your dog. A vast majority of behavior issues stem from a lack of exercise and while there are many ways to exercise your dog, for this discussion, we will focus on running/jogging with your dog.

As a runner myself, I know how hard it is to find the time and the motivation to run on some days…the last thing you need is for an inexperienced, wild dog along to ruin your run once you are out there. But, look at the big picture. Usually after just a few “training runs,” your dog will understand what your expectations are and can transform into a great running partner. And just think of the time you’ll save by killing two birds with one stone, so to speak. You won’t have to take the time to walk your dog in addition to running by yourself. So, here are some quick tips...

• Be Selfish! Take on the attitude that this is your run and it’s a privilege for your dog to come with you. So many of us get hung up on the fact that the dog wants to stop and sniff or pee on everything. Well, my answer to that is, too bad. Give your dog an opportunity to relieve himself at the beginning of the run and then again at the end, or middle. Other than that, the dog is only stopping because you are allowing him to.

• Position Decide what side of you your dog will run on and stick with it. It’s not only a hassle to have to switch the leash around every time your dog changes sides, but it’s dangerous as well.

• No Socializing Your dog may want to stop and say hi to every dog he sees, but he’ll figure out real quick that when you are running, he is not socializing. Just keep going as you pass other dogs. Often times it helps to cross the street to make the passing a little easier.

• Appropriate collars/harness You may decide to use something that gives you more control than you need for a regular walk with your dog. I have found that the gentle leaders, although take a while for the dog to get used to, provide the absolute most control when jogging with your dog. They do need to be fit properly.

The bottom line is this. You and your dog need exercise…doesn’t it make sense to do it together??? So, take the time to work with your dog on becoming a great running partner. I promise, you will notice an overall improvement in his behavior and it will be well worth it! Mandy Kennedy, with Unleashed Dog Training & Behavior Center, has seen and done most of it.

“When I started training dogs 15 years ago, there was only one way to do it…put a choke chain on the dog, teach him new behaviors, exert your dominance through force and then praise him when he complied, usually out of fear.”

But now, there is so much new evidence and research to support other methods of behavior modification and training. Why do so many trainers still rely on those out of date, ineffective and often dangerous training techniques?

Since relocating from the Bay Area less than a year ago, Unleashed is shocked to see how few trainers are actually implementing a positive approach to training. In the Bay Area pet owners are hard pressed to find a trainer still implementing the old school, compulsive style of training, yet here in the Greater Sacramento Area, it is the norm. There is even a term, “cookie trainer,” that is supposed to be a derogatory phrase apparently used to describe trainers who subscribe to a more humane, and effective approach. Well, Unleashed Dog Training & Behavior Center is proud to be labeled “cookie trainers!” The simple fact that we educate owners to control essential resources and ask their dogs to earn motivators is the first step to improving the relationship between dogs and their owners. Positive does not mean permissive. Just ask yourself this as an owner, do I want my dog behaving because she wants to earn something positive (not always food) or because she is afraid of the consequence of what might happen if she doesn’t comply? With the recent popularity of the TV Show, The Dog Whisperer, many owners are gravitating to local trainers who tout their relationship with Cesar Milan’s methods. This show does make for great TV, but is physical force the best way to establish leadership? Check out this article written by Lisa Mullinax with 4 Paws University in Sacramento… http://www.4pawsu.com/dogpsychology.htm

In the end, Unleashed wants dog owners to know there are options out there for training your dog. You can get compliant, well-mannered and appropriate behavior without using force and without using food forever! But, are you willing to praise, throw a stick, give a belly rub or just a quick verbal “Good girl” forever when your dog chooses to make good decisions?” Because that’s what it’s going to take
Unleash your dog’s potential!!!

Time is running out to register for positive reinforcement classes with Unleashed. Classes are a convenient drive from Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Cameron Park, Shingle Springs and Placerville. They are scheduled to start Thursday, May 7th at Lakehills Church in El Dorado Hills (near Target). There are so many different training styles, how is the average pet owner supposed to know what is the best method, or piece of equipment for their dog? Over the past 15 years Unleashed has heard it all. Here are some phrases that pop up when I talk to clients about positive reinforcement training? “I don’t want my dog to get fat,” or I don’t want her to do it just because I have cookies.” These are valid concerns that I agree with. But, the fact of the matter is, that although food can be one component of positive reinforcement dog training, it is certainly not the only one. Most owners want to do the “right thing” by their dog and teach them manners and commands without using force. Effective use of motivators and a relationship built on trust, consistency and leadership is the key. What motivates your dog? Is it the ball, is it a belly scratch, is it a trip to the park, is it a stick, pine cone, or is it food? The list can go on and on. Once your dog figures out that you control her resources and you control her motivators, what won’t she do for you???? Positive reinforcement training allows you to build the relationship you strive for with your dog using tools that your dog loves….just ask her to work for them. Folsom, El Dorado Hills and the Greater Sacramento Area have such wonderful outlets for dogs. As a pet owner, you understand that the more control you have of your dog, the more freedom your dog has because she’s a joy to bring places. Unleash your dog’s potential!

For more information about Positive Reinforcement Dog Training, or to schedule a private consultation, please contact us at unleashmk@comcast.net

Group Dog Training Classes

The cost of group dog training classes can range from $90-$150 for the whole session. In the meantime, Unleashed continues to search for a venue to teach group classes in the El Dorado Hills/Folsom Area. So, on these beautiful days in El Dorado Hills, take your dog to the park to the throw the ball or to the Folsom Dog Park and have her work for what they want most. Management, not training, can be the difference between a chewed couch, stolen food off the counters, numerous holes in the backyard and complaints from neighbors for barking. Good management essentially means setting you and your dog up for success. That is to say, understand that your dog is not a furry person but an animal that possesses a set of instincts which guide her behaviors. In order to successfully communicate with your dog, it’s important to understand what these instincts are and how you can use them to your advantage. For example, dogs are den animals who enjoy and relax in tight, enclosed places. Being den animals, their instincts usually tell them to keep their den clean. Crate training uses the dog’s natural instincts to help you with destructive behavior as well as housetraining. Crate Training is one of four main management tools that owners need to be aware of. How many you use will be determined by your goals and lifestyle with your dog.

Unleashed Dog Training is located in El Dorado Hills and serves the greater Sacramento Area. Adding a puppy to the family is an exciting and trying time for everyone. The keys to success when getting a new puppy are:

Realistic Expectations
It’s important to understand that puppies are not furry little people. They come with a set of instincts that guide their behaviors. Depending on your puppy’s age, she most likely has been playing with other puppies. She doesn’t have hands so she uses her mouth for play. You will soon realize her teeth feel like little razor blades and she can overwhelm small children quickly. Puppies usually don’t get bladder control until they are about 12 weeks old. So, it’s important to take your puppy out to potty often (every 1 ½ hours). Praise her when she potties outside. Most puppies will need to potty after they eat, sleep and play.

Management

There are four management tools that are essential with a young puppy. You can use all four, or any combination of them, depending on your needs.
1. Exercise is the first and most important management tool. “A tired dog is well-behaved dog.” 2. Crate Training. Dogs are den animals and feel safe and secure in tight, enclosed places.

3. Tie Down. A tie down is a short leash attached to something immobile. A tie down should never be used if you are not home.
4. Dragging Leash. A dragging leash is a 6ft nylon puppy leash with the smallest buckle you can find. A dragging leash is ALWAYS attached to your puppy’s buckle collar when someone is home.
Relationship
A solid relationship with your dog is THE key component in achieving your dog training goals. Many owners can’t wait to get started with the training of their new puppy and while teaching them sit, down and not pulling on the leash is important, there is plenty of time to work on these commands as your puppy gets older. Spending quality time on name recognition and attention is the priority with young puppies. You want to always encourage attention from your puppy by reinforcing them with praise, play or a treat when they look at you, or follow you on or off leash. Be silly, be unpredictable with your reinforcement and most of all, be fun. This will dramatically improve your chances of achieving the ever-elusive off leash come command when your dog is older.

Socialization
Do not underestimate the importance of good socialization for a young pup. Imprint socialization phases your puppy goes through cannot be “done later.” It is important in the development of your puppy’s personality to expose them safely at an early age to life experiences. Many dog owners get mixed messages when facing the socialization question. Some professionals suggest not taking your puppy off your property until she has all of her shots, but by then she has missed some important developmental milestones that cannot be retrieved. More dogs are put to sleep for behavior issues stemming from a lack of socialization than dying from diseases like Parvo and Corona Virus every year. Yes, it is important to be smart when socializing a young pup. Keep her on leash and on pavement. Don’t let her come into contact with other feces. But, take her on walks around the neighborhood. Introduce her to small children, kids on bikes and skateboards. Take her outside of Safeway and let her watch and see the shopping carts, cars, and buses. Introduce her to well-socialized, vaccinated adult dogs. These are all experiences that we want her to see as positive. This effort will contribute greatly to well-rounded, more stable adult dog.

By following these important first steps with your puppy, you are giving yourself, your family and your puppy a head start in attaining your goals for your new companion.

Unleash Your Dog’s Potential

Contact:

Mandy Kennedy

Unleashed! Wherever you live in the greater Sacramento and Foothill Area, you will find an array of options for training your dog. Which option suits you depends on a number of factors. Dog training options are usually broken down into 3 categories. There are group classes, private lessons and board & train.

The cost of group dog training classes can range from $90-$150 for the whole session.

Things to consider when researching options for dog obedience classes are:

How much experience does the instructor have in teaching group classes?

How many dogs are in each class?

Are there assistants who help the instructor?

Are there any restrictions on specific breeds in class?

What equipment is used on the dogs?

If you have more questions regarding group classes, feel free to contact Mandy Kennedy of Unleashed Dog Training and Behavior Center by EMAIL (just click) or call (916) 605-9778.

Private Lessons and Behavior Consultations are another option when it comes to achieving your training goals. Private lessons are perfect for an owner who wants to be very involved in the training process, wants to work at their own pace and in the comfort of their own home. They are also a great option for dogs who are not ready or able to focus in the sometimes seemingly chaotic environment of a group class. Private lessons are one on one sessions with a professional dog trainer. You can often tailor the lessons to meet your needs and your schedule. Private lessons move much quicker than group classes, since each lesson is specifically geared to your dog training goals. You can do as many or as few lessons as you like, however, many trainers will give you a discount for buying a “package of lessons.”

The down side of private lessons is two fold. Private lessons can be very expensive. Many trainers charge over a $100 per session. Although an enormous amount of material and information will be gained with a good trainer, it can still add up to be a lot of money. The other down side of lessons vs. a group dog training class is the lack of distractions. Most dogs love to learn and training is a stimulating, mentally challenging and rewarding task for dogs. However, the challenge to stay focused becomes exceedingly more difficult in a group class. For many dogs, this challenge is beneficial in helping to achieve your training goals.

Board & Train is another option for owners to consider when training their dog. Board & Train essentially consists of leaving your dog in the care of a professional trainer for a specified period of time and having them train your dog for you. There are a few Board & Train options in the Sacramento Area. This option works well for owners who don’t have the time or knowledge to train their own dogs. The intensity and consistency that an effective Board & Train Program can provide can result in a transformation of behavior in a relatively short amount of time. On the other hand, Board & Train programs are very expensive and can be frustrating for owners who may find their dogs not responding to them the way the dog responded to the trainer. The bottom line is that it’s always best to train your own dog, but short of that, it’s very important to get detailed instructions from the facility on how you will follow through with the training they’ve done.

Finally, and most importantly, do some research on the style of training you wish to pursue. There are many schools of thought out there regarding what method is best when it comes to dog training. In the last 10 years training methods have shifted to a much more positive style. Unleashed Dog Training & Behavior Center has seen and practiced both methods over the last 15 years and recognizes the incredible potential dogs have for learning. The “old school” method of compulsive training is not fun for owners or dogs, but most importantly, it’s not as effective as a positive approach either.

Check out our next blog outlining specific differences in training styles and methodology.
